JESUS AWARENESS WEEK
Five Christian student clubs at the University of Redlands will hold "Jesus Awareness Week" April 8-15 with a full schedule of debates, forums and worship services.
A processional to "glorify Jesus Christ" will kick off the week at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 8. The group will walk from the front of the Administration Building to Watchorn Hall carrying palm branches and singing songs to commemorate Palm Sunday and Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. The walk will be followed by a time of worship and prayer walk around campus.
On Monday, April 9, a "Diversity in Religion Reconciliation" talk will be held at 7 p.m. at Orton Center.
A Christian band, Four Drachma Coin, will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Hunsaker Plaza. The band's name is a reference to coins mentioned in the Bible and the number of members in the band.
Christian students at the university will sit on a panel discussion at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at Hunsaker Plaza in an effort to give non-Christian students a chance to discuss various topics and ask questions related to religion. The student panelists all are leaders in the Christian and Catholic groups on campus.
Friday Night Live in the Plaza, a regular event at the university, will feature a Christian band, the Hollow, and Pete MacLeod, a comedian from the national group Clean Comedians, from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 13.
The week will culminate Saturday, April 14, beginning at 2 p.m. with a "Mini One Day" celebration in University Hall featuring worship bands, speakers a free barbecue, movies on the Quad and a sleepover in the Greek Theatre. The celebration is patterned after the large annual Christian youth festival, One Day, in Shelbyville, Tenn.
The students who sleep in the Greek Theatre will participate in a sunrise service at 6 a.m. Easter Sunday held by Calvary Chapel.
Senior Amy Raine, an active participant in Calvary Chapel, said the sunrise service is a fitting close to "Jesus Awareness Week" and a welcome substitute for students who cannot make it home for the Easter weekend with their families. "I stayed home last year just for this service, and I had a wonderful time."
The clubs participating in the week's events include Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Calvary Chapel, Campus Crusade for Christ, Trinity College Group and Newman Club.
The groups will staff a table in the Irvine Commons the entire week with information and interactive opportunities in an effort to reach the students who do not attend the week's events.
