NORTH CAROLINA RESIDENT LEADS REDLANDS STUDENT BODY

Rob Schwenker, a senior from Highpoint, N.C., with a major in international relations, serves as the elected president of Associated Students of the University of Redlands (ASUR) for the 2001-02 school year.

Included in his platform are an outreach programs for the Office of Community Service Learning, diversity programming and expanding the President's Cabinet.

The outreach program is intended to get students on campus more involved in community service. A list of contacts in the community will be set up to match services with volunteers. Schwenker looks forward to working with the elderly population as well as the high school population.

As for diversity programming, "We plan to concentrate on quality not quantity," said Schwenker. He plans to cut back on some programs so that the ones that are planned will draw and affect more of the student population.

"We are going to increase the quality of the programs by increasing the funding for these events," said Schwenker. "And we will definitely do a dialogue and diversity week like last year because it was really successful."

Currently, Schwenker is working with the New York Times to bring Pulitzer-prize winning authors to the campus for a series on race. He also is planning a three-week series in relation to the events on the East Coast.

His cabinet has been increased to 17 members. New members include a student from the Johnston and women's centers, the safety commission and constitution chairs and a freshman representative.

Schwenker has been actively involved in the campus community for the last three years. He is president of the Inter-Fraternity Council and a member of Kappa Sigma Sigma. Last year he was a resident advisor in Cortner, the advertising editor of the Bulldog weekly, on the forum for diversity awareness and served as chair of the ASUR Senate. In the past he has served as an admissions host and was a member of the Yeomen service club.

Opeyemi Oluyemi, a junior from Corona, serves as vice president of the student body. Oluyemi has a double major in biology and philosophy and a minor in chemistry. He is a member of Chi Sigma Chi fraternity and resident coordinator for Fairmont Hall.
