Dr. Hindupur “Rama” Ramakrishna founded the India Study Abroad program in 2006 to expose Information Technology students to the global trends transforming the IT business. But he quickly recognized that all business students would benefit from the program, because India’s evolving global role is being felt in every industry:

“The Indian economy put the world on notice on two fronts: Information Technology (IT) work and IT enabled services (ITES), and the steady GDP growth of around 8% for the last 15 years.  Both of these matter to all business students as it will affect their everyday business life through exposure to potentially huge markets and through the possibility of reaping financial benefits through offshoring of IT and ITES work.”

The trip includes lectures at XIME University (one of India’s top business schools), tours of selected businesses and sightseeing in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi.

Dr. Rama is himself from Bangalore. His connections allow students special access to local companies and to historic landmarks: Last year, the group was given a VIP tour of the historic Mysore Palace and exclusive access to India’s State House.

Ultimately, Dr. Rama wants students to gain an understanding of globalization that goes beyond common perceptions and fears about outsourcing.

“I want them to see that there are very competent people in all parts of the world that are burning to be part of the global marketplace. The Internet and businesses with the Internet as their platform have made it possible.”

He also hopes that their experiences in India spark innovative and entrepreneurial ideas that students can apply at home:

“When people in the U.S. get exposed to these concepts, they realize the opportunities that exist for new businesses or for doing things differently in the organizations that they are already part of to take advantage of the opportunities that exist across the world.”
