Duke Gets New Digs
The University of Redlands mascot Duke will begin his reign March 10 in style with a redesigned kennel.
The kennel, which is taller and wider, features an addition of a 4-foot wide brick "sun porch" which extends to the west so Duke can warm himself in the afternoon sunshine.
The layout and design of the kennel was a collaboration of creative ideas from Library Assistant Trisha Aurelio, who has helped for many years with the mascot walking activities, Facility Project Manager Nancy Roth and handler Beth Doolittle.
"The new kennel makes caring for Duke easier," said Doolittle. "The old kennel was lower and not very easy to clean."
Renovations began on Feb. 5 with installation of the new cage and concluded on Feb. 25 when the Facilities Management Grounds team laid the brick surface in the newly included area.
Duke, the namesake of Victor Leroy Duke, president of the University of Redlands from 1915-33, will reside in court on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
