Bulldogs Claim Championships

The University of Redlands Men's swimming and diving team and the Women's basketball team concluded successful seasons by claiming conference titles in February.

The Men's swimming and diving team dominated conference competition finishing a perfect 7-0 against SCIAC rivals winning its fourth straight SCIAC title.

The team stamped its supremacy on the season by easily outdistancing the field in the conference finals, winning by 41 points. Senior Luke Bagnaschi played a pivotal role in the team's success, clinching his fourth consecutive title in the 3M and 1M events and earning the SCIAC Male-Athlete of the Year Award.

Bagnaschi concluded his stellar career at Redlands with an undefeated record in championship participation and by qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Along with teammates Kyle Keller and Trevor Harp, Bagnaschi will compete at the national event in St. Louis, Mo., later this month.

The Women's basketball team followed a different path to the top of the SCIAC this season with a shared conference title with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps colleges.

Struggling with inconsistency early in the year, the team found itself three games out of first place. Nevertheless, they didn't give up. "With their backs to the wall, the girls never quit," said Head Coach Jim Ducey. "They gelled as a team, and really focused on the details of what they needed to do."

They transformed their play and strung together a remarkable nine-game winning streak to round out the regular season. It was the first conference title for Ducey, and the second overall for the women's basketball program (the first in 1992-93).

Despite a disappointing playoff loss that ended their chances of going to the NCAA tournament, the team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons ever.

Ducey summed it up simply, "It was a lot of fun."
