School of Ed Dean Named

William B. Stanley joins the university July 1 as dean of the School of Education. He also becomes the founding recipient of the Robert A. and Mildred Peronia Naslund Dean's Chair in Education.

Stanley previously served as dean of the School of Education at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Prior to moving into higher education, he taught social studies in middle and secondary schools for 14 years.

"Never has the education and practice of teaching been more demanding," said President James Appleton. "Dean Stanley has a proven commitment to the values of lifelong learning that are so strong at Redlands, providing the knowledge for teachers to be successful throughout their careers and in the diverse environments of today's society."

Stanley said he believes the mission for schools of education requires a view of teachers as intellectuals, of teacher education as a university-wide responsibility and of diversity as a central focus.

"A student who has not been exposed to the wide range of cultures and perspectives that have shaped our society and the modern world cannot be considered well educated," he said.

"I look forward to working on collaborative relationships with public school administrators and teachers, state education officials, faculty, students and the university as a whole in fulfilling this mission for the University of Redlands."

Stanley held faculty and administrative positions at Louisiana State University and the University of Delaware prior to moving to Colorado in 1998. He is the editor of "Critical Issues in Social Studies Research for the 21st Century" (Information Age Publishers 2001) and has published widely on such topics as social science and science education.

He received his Ed.D. in social education, curriculum theory and foundations of education from Rutgers University, master's degree from Rutgers in American intellectual and modern European history and bachelor's degree in history and social science from Kean College.
