Events Celebrate History
Faculty, staff and students can take advantage of a number of activities being held throughout February to celebrate Black History Month. The events are sponsored by the African-American Association.
On Friday, Feb. 15, the movie "White Man's Burden," starring John Travolta, will be shown at 9 p.m. in the Plaza Café. "Glory," which stars Denzel Washington, will be shown on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. in the Plaza Café.
Everyone also is being encouraged to take a piece of yellow poster board and share their interpretation of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Posters must be submitted to the Student Leadership and Involvement Center office in the Hunsaker Center by Friday, Feb. 22. Posters will then be displayed in the Hunsaker Center Feb. 25-27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.
A Black History Month Dinner will be held Thursday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. in the Orton Center. The event will feature food and entertainment. Admission is $10.
The African-American Association also will host their annual Talent Extravaganza on Friday, March 1 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel.
Black History Month was founded as Negro History Week in 1924, with the weeklong observance becoming Black History Month in 1976. Negro History Week was first envisioned by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1915, but it was not until 1924 that it was celebrated. It was held during the second week of February to honor two Americans who affected blacks tremendously during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is Feb. 12, and Frederick Douglass, whose birthday is Feb. 14.
