A Fond Farewell
The campus community said good-bye to five of its longtime faculty members this spring, as they walked away with 148 collective years of service to the university and its students. Department of English Professor Howard Hurlbut retired after 42 years. Physics Professor Richard Carlson departed after 34 years. Music Professor Alexandra Pierce gave 33 years. Mary Scherer, professor of mathematics and computer science, retired after 23 years. And Associate Professor of Athletics Ken Miller was the baby of the group with 17 years of service. We hope to still see them around campus.
Retiring faculty members Richard Carlson, professor of physics, and Mary Scherer, professor of mathematics and computer science, were honored during a retirement reception in May.
The university also loses Marilyn (Stuart) Gower, payroll coordinator in Human Resources, after 11-1/2 years of service. A retirement reception for Gower will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Alumni House
