Members of the university's Human Resources Department celebrated with ProBusiness, the university's payroll software provider since 1998, in January as the university was the first client to go live on a new software system called Golden Gate. More than 30 members of ProBusiness' Golden Gate team wore Redlands' T-shirts in commemoration of the university going live Jan. 9. A celebration was held at the company's various offices later in the month, with Lucinda Brinks, human resources analyst and project leader, unveiling a plaque on the Golden Gate mural. As a result of being the first client, the university was able to upgrade and enhance its technology at little cost.



The sixth edition of the textbook "Business Communications," co-authored by Associate Professor of Management and Business Don McCormick,was published by Prentice-Hall. In addition to his work on the book, McCormick has developed the content for the textbook's companion Web site at http://cw.prenhall.com/bookbind/pubbooks/hemphill/.

At the Allied Social Science Association's conference in New Orleans in January, Chris Niggle professor of economics, presented a paper addressing the issues of globalization, neoliberalism and public pension systems. In addition, his paper on "Political Economy of Social Security Reform Proposals" was published in the Journal of Economic Issues' December 2000 issue. He has also reviewed two books: L. Randy Wray's "Understanding Modern Money: the Key to Full Employment" in the Journal of Economic Issues, September 2000 issue, and Peter Clarke's "The Keynesian Revolution and its Economic Consequences" in the Review of Political Economy, vol. 12, no. 4.

Management and Business Professor Jim Pick has been awarded a grant by the California Urban Environmental Research and Education Project. The grant will be used to analyze economic, environmental and census data in the Imperial Valley-Mexicali area and builds on Pick's work done in the U.S.-Mexico bi-nationality project funded by a Ford Foundation grant.

Fred Rabinowitz, professor of psychology, authored a chapter called "Group Therapy for Men" published in "The New Handbook for Psychotherapy and Counseling with Men" edited by Gary Brooks and Glenn Good and published by Jossey-Bass. The handbook is a comprehensive resource book for therapists who work with men.

Julie Shuler assistant professor of communicative disorders, received the Outstanding Service Award from the California Speech and Language Association.

Ed Wingenbach, assistant professor of government, has published an article in the November 2000 issue of the Journal of Politics. The article, co-authored with Benjamin Radcliff, is entitled "Preference Aggregation, Functional Pathologies, and Democracy: A Social Choice Defense of Participatory Democracy."
