Write Off the Tree

Public Safety Officer Roy Izumi can't resist a good piece of wood - especially when it comes engrained with a charming history.

Izumi secured lumber that was about to be discarded from Douglas firs cut down near the Memorial Chapel in the spring of 2000.

"I wasn't sure what I'd do with it at the time," said Izumi, who enjoys woodworking. "I thought I might try to make furniture out of it - maybe a table."

He hasn't made the table yet, but earlier this year Izumi started crafting ink pens from the wood fragments.

"There were people who said it couldn't be done because the wood wasn't hard enough," Izumi said, smiling. "But I found a way to do it."

After he got the tricky sanding process down, Izumi made prototypes of the pens and used them for several weeks.

"I wanted to make sure they didn't fall apart - that they worked, didn't fade and held together well," Izumi said, taking one of the prototypes out of his pocket.

Izumi recently gave the first set of pens to President James Appleton.

"I thought he'd like to have one because of the sentimental value that comes with them - the history," Izumi said.

Izumi said he has plenty more wood and is willing to make additional pens for sale to people with ties to the university. He will contribute a percentage of each sale to the university. For more information, contact him at home at (909) 863-0593.
