Thanks to a cutting-edge cogeneration plant, the university is now producing a majority of its own energy, as well as heating and cooling for 14 campus buildings. This sophisticated system provides three-quarters of the university's energy needs and makes efficient use of the heat produced in the process by capturing it for building heating and cooling.
Work began recently on expanding the system to heat and cool the pool in the Thompson Aquatic Center and the Field House near the stadium.
Redlands' cogeneration plant allows the campus to rely less on outside energy suppliers and also gives annual environmental benefits equal to planting 1,000-plus acres of forest and to removing 640 cars from the road.
