Redlands Sustains

On-Campus Courses

Students in Professor Pete Sherman’s environmental design studio, where students work collaboratively on environmental problem-solving projects, are developing a composting system that would turn Redlands’ waste into a resource.

The development of a composting system could be beneficial to both the university and the community. The system would produce up to 50 tons of compost a year, which is far more than the university alone can use, so it could be donated to local nurseries and farms. The university may even be able to set up a barter deal where the university would receive produce from local farmers in exchange for the compost.

“What we’re learning sticks because it’s actually making a difference,” said Harrison Hogan ’08.

"It's really cool because the president has taken a pledge to make the school more sustainable and this class is leading the way in getting sustainability in action."
