Picnic Celebrates New School Year

University employees gathered in the Rose Garden east of Hall of Letters on Thursday, Oct. 10 for the annual Staff Organization Fall Picnic.

The weather was mild and the food plentiful at the event, which is designed to maintain the university's sense of community and collegiality.

A variety of food was available, including crispy salads, home-style mashed potatoes and tangy tamales. Deserts also were abundant, with picnic-goers indulging in brownies, cookies and cakes.

Employees enjoy a variety of food.

Several prizes were raffled off, including entertainment books packed with coupons and other discounts, School of Education tote bags and a University of Redlands clock.

Vice presidents Ron Stephany and Phil Dolittle try their hand at the raffle while Mary Martinez wishes them luck.

Picnic-goers also were invited to guess the number of pieces of candy in a plastic, jack-o-lantern-shaped bucket. The winner, Publications Manager Michelle Baty, took home the pail of candy.

President James Appleton addressed the picnickers, updating them on campus construction, increased enrollment and other issues. He also praised staff for getting the 2002-03 school year off to a smooth start.

He was particularly complimentary of facilities management workers and other staff responsible for dealing with recent campus electrical outages.

"All of you have done a terrific job during this unfortunate crisis," Appleton said. "When we experience difficulty, this university responds very effectively. Thanks for a terrific start to the academic year."

Former Purdue Coordinator Heads Fitness Center

Scott Fricke, former strength and conditioning coordinator for Purdue University's recreational sports facility, is now heading up Redlands' new Fitness Center.

While at Purdue, he completed a master's in exercise physiology that included researching ways to increase the velocity of a baseball being struck by a bat.

Fricke has a keen interest in working with both student-athletes and students who are not involved in organized sports.

"I look forward to being a part of a fitness program for the university community, as well as a very competitive and successful athletic community," Fricke said.

Fricke also has worked as the strength and conditioning coach for the Salt Lake Stingers, the AAA baseball affiliate of the Anaheim Angels. He holds a bachelor's in kinesiology from the University of Northern Colorado, where he also played shortstop on the baseball team.
