KLON Broadcasts on KUOR

Campus listeners to KUOR 89.1 FM heard new voices as KLON, one of the nation's top jazz radio stations, began broadcasting from the station's frequency Aug. 9. Known as "America's Jazz Station," KLON is a 24-hour public radio station based in Long Beach that provides jazz to Los Angeles and Orange counties on 88.1 FM.

As you may know, KUOR radio station has gone through many evolutions over the years, with changing formats and management structures. With the closure of the communications major in 1984, the station no longer was a part of the educational program of the institution. We also determined that continued enhancement of the station's equipment and capabilities, particularly as we approach the "digital" broadcasting age, would require use of valuable resources needed for our students. Still, however, we have valued our license of the station and sought an arrangement by which the station would continue to contribute to the university and the region.

We're excited to bring this level of quality jazz programming to our listeners. The move also brings a high level of visibility of the university to Los Angeles and Orange counties, as KLON has made a commitment to promote the university events. We also are pursuing new Internet technologies that will allow broadcasting of local athletic events over the Web.

The university expresses its deep appreciation to the employees, students and alumni who have dedicated their time and energy to KUOR. In order to implement the management agreement, it was necessary to eliminate all existing positions in the radio station. I assure you that each employee impacted was treated in a fair and equitable manner.

Snow Falls on Campus

It has snowed a few times in Redlands over the past several decades. But in August? Sure enough, snow fell on the campus as the University of Redlands became Camden College during a winter in Vermont for an upcoming film, "The Rules of Attraction."

The movie is directed by Roger Avary, co-writer of "Pulp Fiction" and director of "Killing Zoe," and is based loosely on a book of the same name by Brett Easton Ellis. The cast includes Eric Stoltz of "Mask," James Van Der Beek of "Dawson's Creek," Shannyn Sossamon of "A Knight's Tale" and Faye Dunaway of "Chinatown."

Though there were few students in town, several participated in the production, and in very different ways. Sophomores Kai Lyles and Philip Hudec were extras in the film, as was Joe Soelter, father of Vicki Gomes in the Public Relations Office. And then there was the group of Johnston students who were invited to lunch with the crew. Avary stopped by their table to greet them, started to talk, then suddenly proclaimed that they needed to help Sossamon get in character. He marched the group into Sossamon's trailer and shut the door behind them.

For the snow scenes, the production company brought in nine trucks each carrying 144 300-pound blocks of ice, shoving the blocks into an enormous snow-making machine. Interior scenes included a conference room in the Hall of Letters that was transformed into a professor's office-the set designer dressed the room to resemble that of our own English Professor Bill McDonald.
