Network Speeds Up

Information Technology Services (ITS) has finished connecting all on-campus individuals to the new network. This allows users to have better file sharing capabilities and Intranet use including shared calendars.

In addition, the highly anticipated additional bandwidth to the Internet has been installed, which will allow for speedier access to the Internet once ITS gets the additional configuration from Qwest Communications. ITS is in the process of configuring Internet traffic to meet the needs of the campus community. With employees and students segmented on separate connections and network management software in place, users will experience a notable difference.

For more information on the network, contact Network Manager Matt Riley at ext. 3928 or by e-mail at matt_riley@redlands.edu.

E-Mail Access Off-Site

The new mail services allow employees to access their e-mail accounts via a Web browser when away from the office. Access the Microsoft Exchange site at mail.redlands.edu using firstname_lastname@redlands.edu. For those who have not set up their new accounts, go to www.redlands.edu/its/its/new_email.cfm. For information on e-mail access, contact Lance Rader at ext. 3923 or lance_rader@redlands.edu.

Staff Organization Welcomes Administrators

In the spirit of the Staff Organization's all-inclusive events, the group has proposed amending its constitution to include administrators (except for Cabinet members). The general membership approved the addition at its April 4 meeting with a 78 percent vote in favor. The amendment is pending administrative approval.

Several staff members who have served as the organization's officers have become administrators during their terms, including Scott Vance, Skip Cain and current Staff Organization President Janise Rick, office manager for admissions. The amendment allows Rick, who became the group's president in June and an administrator in September, to finish out her term as president.

Under the amended constitution, "the term staff refers to all full- and part-time staff and administrative personnel employed by the University of Redlands with the exception of the following: members of the President's Cabinet, contract employees, student employees." All staff employees are considered members regardless of active participation.

Allowing administrators into the group was not a new discussion. It is an issue that has come up a number of times over the years. Some staff members expressed concerns about having their supervising administrator involved in the organization. But Carpenter Supervisor Rick DeStefano, the group's vice president and chair of the constitution committee, pointed out that many administrators do not supervise staff.

DeStefano said the group considered administrators' voices as well. "We looked at the interests, the complaints, and they had the same concerns as staff--salaries, overtime, sick leave, kin-care, etc.," he said. "And they have no forum to present grievances.

"We looked at having that group join the staff in presenting those concerns."

Rick said being an administrator and serving in the organization gives her another dimension: "I'm supervising staff. I want to know what their fears are."

She hopes more administrators and staff will become involved. "It has been the same people doing the work," said Rick. "This gives us another resource of volunteers."

The group has five committees: personnel, professional development, ways & means, social and newsletter.

A Bench With A View

If you find yourself sitting on the bench overlooking the Administration Building's Rose Garden, look again--not at the roses, but the bench you are sitting upon. On Friday, April 20, the Rose Garden received an addition--a bench named for university switchboard operator Grace Porch '81WC, who passed away last April.

Porch's love of the university and its rose garden led her daughters, Sue Goding and Doris Porch, to donate the 1,920-pound bench in memory of their mother.

Director of Physical Plant Fred Weck worked closely with Porch's daughters and the manufacturer of the bench and was instrumental in obtaining the crane needed for placing the bench. Due to its weight and placement, a crane with a special counter weight had to be used.

The concrete bench with the inscription, "In Memory of Grace Porch," was placed on the brick terrace behind "The Redlands Deposition" sculpture overlooking the Quad and Rose Garden.

In addition to the bench, Porch's daughters have funded the Grace Porch Memorial Scholarship in honor of their mother.

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

Associate Professor of Theatre Arts Chris Beach wants all the shoes he can get his feet into--or a performer's feet. Boots, sneakers, new, used, big, little. (He especially wants large sizes.) He needs about 500 pairs that run the "gamut of shoe styles" for the fall Theatre Department Mainstage Production of "The Yellow Gate," an original work by Beach. He calls it: "A piece of theatre about how we leave things behind--ideas, parts of ourselves, people, phases of life and even our shoes." Beach said the shoes will become a wall of scenery, as well as props as performers take on characters based on the shoes they step into.

Open auditions for performers, musicians, dancers, singers and athletes--all ages, all types--will be held from 7:30-10 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Glenn Wallichs Theatre. (Dress to move.) Sign up for 7:30-8:45 p.m. or 8:45-10 p.m. by calling ext. 4008 or stopping by the theatre department.

Those who want to donate shoes should leave them in the plastic trashcans marked "shoes" at the back loading dock on the theatre's southwest corner.
