Spring Picnic Blooms Smiles

50/50 winner Dan Westrick caught daydreaming about how to spend his winnings!

Picture-perfect weather and an abundance of food made this year's Staff Organization Spring Picnic a particularly pleasant one. But John "Dan" Westrick, a carpenter in building maintenance, enjoyed the April 23 event for a far more tangible reason: the cash.

Westrick won this year's 50/50 raffle, claiming $180. An additional $180 collected during the fundraiser will go to staff organization programming.

This is the first time Westrick has walked away from a university drawing with a prize. He said he isn't sure how the extra money will be spent. "I really haven't thought that far ahead yet," he said nearly an hour after winning.

Several entertainment books packed with coupons and other discounts also were given away during the picnic, which was held in the Hall of Letters Rose Garden. All employees, including administrators and faculty, were invited to attend.

Picnic-goers sampled a variety of foods during the event, including spicy tamales and salsa, crispy fried chicken and tangy salads.

President James Appleton addressed the picnickers, updating them on campus construction projects and other university developments. He also thanked employees for their work.

"These are important times," he said. "I am glad you are here. It's good to have fun and relax … to realize we are all on a team together."
